Treatments for anxiety disorders
Considering that there are numerous anxiety disorders and even more possible causes for these disorders, there are also different types of treatments involved. However, there is one very common part of any kind of treatment, and that is joining a support group. Sufferers tend to think that they are the only ones who have to deal with the issues they are dealing with. Once they realize that there are other people with the same symptoms, fears and worries, they are more likely to acknowledge the problem, come closer to getting cured or even benefit from other people’s stories and experiences. Even though this is an important step towards getting cured, it is not really a treatment.
One very common form of treatment when all of these disorders are in question is therapy, however, depending on the type of disorder, different types of therapies can be recommended and sometimes even more than one is suggested. A very common and a very beneficial type of treatment seems to be cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). This is a combination of behavioral therapy, which involves methods designed in such a way that they encourage desired behavior and try to eliminate or discourage undesired behavior, and cognitive therapy, which helps patients to identify dysfunctional thinking and change it. CBT is usually recommended to people suffering from all types of anxiety disorders, but there are additional types of therapies that can be recommended.
For example, patients who suffer from panic attacks are usually recommended another form of therapy, which will help them deal with the emotional issues that they are experiencing. People with phobia(s) can benefit from Eye Movement Desensitization and hypnotherapy, but these are not always recommended to each and every patient.
When it comes to the usage of medication, they are usually used in combination with some form of therapy. Most commonly, the medications used to treat anxiety disorders are certain types of antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs, which can vary depending on a type of disorder. Although these are mostly effective for almost every anxiety disorder, there are suggestions that patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder do not benefit from certain anti-anxiety drugs, but this has not been proved yet. Also, there are no clear conclusions as to what kind of drug treatment definitely works for patients with post-traumatic stress.
To sum up, there is no doubt that therapy is the most important part of treatment and every patient should take therapy seriously, especially if they have been dealing with their issues for a long time. Visiting a doctor is not only advisable, but necessary because he or she is the only one who can determine the type of disorder, a possible cause and the right treatment, which will always include therapy and possibly, the use of certain medications.
