How to deal with panic attacks
Since the cause of panic attacks is usually extremely difficult to determine, patients are usually advised to undergo cognitive behavioral therapy, which is, put simply, a talking therapy. However, since it may take a long time to cure this type of anxiety disorder, it may happen to sufferers to experience panic episodes from time to time even if they are visiting a therapist. But no matter whether you are being treated or not, there is a way that can help you deal with panic attacks, especially in public.
First of all, it is important that you remember that panic attacks are brief episodes and that the worst will be over soon. Thus, when a panic attack happens, try to keep in mind that everything will be fine soon and that nothing bad will happen. During a panic attack, the sufferer usually focuses on what can happen, and most commonly, they imagine the worst case scenario such as having a heart attack or even dying. Keep in mind that none of these actually happen and that you will be start feeling better soon.
The most common symptoms are dizziness, sweating, palpitations, shaking and difficulty breathing. Once you start feeling that one of these symptoms or all of them have kicked in, do not try to control them because you will end up doing the opposite. Simply acknowledge the symptoms, do not think about what will happen because you are at that point, very prone to having negative thoughts which will only make things worse.
A good idea is to find a place to sit down. Do not worry that this will make you look odd. Even though you are feeling terrible, keep in mind that you won’t look that way. People will probably think that you are worried and you won’t look any different from a person that has been running and has
stopped to take a break. If you can, try counting backwards or concentrate on another activity that might be helpful. Some people say that it is also a good idea to call a friend or someone who will reassure you that everything will be alright or you can come up with a phrase that you will repeat to yourself and thus comfort yourself.
If you constantly have to deal with panic attacks, keep in mind that this is not embarrassing. There are a lot of people who are currently dealing with it and there are also a great number of people who have experienced it at least once in their lifetime. Admit that you have a problem, visit a doctor and do everything you can to deal with this issue. There have been cases where panic attacks happen only once in a lifetime or when they go away on their own, but those cases are rare and you can’t rely on the fact that this is how it’s going to be for you. If you have been experiencing panic attacks quite frequently, especially for a long time, visit a doctor and do not let your anxiety disorder take over your life.
